Thank you for being brave enough to share, and being so thoughtful about the impact on your professional community.Evan Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04769274706597594656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3443429211147580473.post-56183397221838579342018-02-02T01:28:58.266-08:002018-02-02T01:28:58.266-08:00Robert, I’m so glad that nurse practictioner had a...Robert, I’m so glad that nurse practictioner had a clue, and you are here to witness. My heart goes out to you, to Margo, to Alex, to Alex’s family, to everyone who knew Alex.

My mother suffered from depression most of her life. It hit my adopted father in his 50s; he later became National Mental Health chairman (mid 1970s). People who suffer depression care so much it is overwhelming. It is our job to share in that burden of caring so that no one is overwhelmed.Geoff Knauthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12025560607512616605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3443429211147580473.post-88449599730246154652018-02-01T20:47:48.263-08:002018-02-01T20:47:48.263-08:00Thank you for the thoughtful and warm write-up. Yo...Thank you for the thoughtful and warm write-up. You did amazingly well by your students and Alex’ family. And I am so profoundly sorry that you had to go through that experience.

Alas, as somebody who was almost on the other side of that story just a few months ago, I have two observations to contribute. The first unfortunately isn’t directly actionable for most: For me, the saving angel was somebody who picked up on me not being right and asked directly “are you suicidal?” Granted, she is a nurse practitioner in my doctor’s office and thus better equipped to cope with the fallout from the answer. But I can only emphasize that it made all the difference in my life for me — while I knew I was suicidal, I had no strength left to seek help.

Second, if you ever find yourself staring at the abyss of “if only I had…”, please stop right there. A deep depression can be triggered in weird and unexpected ways. Case in point, for me, the primary trigger was medication I had been taking for something somatic for several years without problems. My doctor and I both knew that this was a potential side effect, in theory, but after years?! Instead, keep telling the stories about Alex and his life because as long as you do so he is alive!Roberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14630412752612918472noreply@blogger.com
